Editorial

Hello and welcome back,
Maintaining a community radio station, running an event experiment, trying to finish the album and being pretty much editor-in-chief of the radio’s newsletter can be overwhelming. Sometimes. I like to say it’s a temporary situation, but I’ve been saying that since the pandemic. Or maybe it’s just drifting along with the new trends of this era where black is white, the jail is freedom, incompetence is a skill, genocide is defence, so obviously actual defence must be an act of aggression. The sentence “I don’t run anything, it all runs me” used to be a decent joke a few years back, but right now it’s a reality of days too short to have time to do my nails. It’s also the reason why the weekly newsletter is missing in your inbox here and there.
Worry not, each skip happens for a reason and it’s nice to read your messages checking you didn’t miss the latest Newsfilter. Your questions often inspire my choice of topic and your emails have been the catalyst for our experiment to redesign the business model of small-scale events. And as you can see in our new series - where there is creativity, there are solutions. There is one question often asked and it seems fair to make it public – why did those political rants disappear?
Well… as I mentioned several times over the past year or so, the reason is very simple – the whole point of humour is that it recreates reality to absurdity and the more absurd it gets the more we laugh. The problem comes when reality becomes absurd. To make jokes about an absurd reality is also very simple: just write it down as it goes. And that’s the moment when we stop laughing and start thinking of screaming instead. Simply said, politicians stole the strongest weapon of humour, therefore it’s not fun anymore. It’s kind of like being a “journalist” on Fox News or Russia Today. It all looks like journalism and acts like journalism, but it’s closer to a preschool theatre play about journalism. You can’t make things like this up even if you’re writing a preschool theatre script and it’s anything but fun.
But the actual breaking point for me came when Netanyahu started to commit genocide on Palestinian civilians and our politicians buried reality in the dark hole of absurd denial. We fully entered the last moment of this era. Expect plenty of educated people to be arrested because they don’t want to witness another genocide, incompetence destroying every institution along with the last bits of trust in them. I’m pretty sure the demons of the past will get their comeback moments once Ukraine isn’t able to defend itself. Remember North Korea? The fully absurd glitch of reality is already showing its effects of invasive virus design – and it’s worth checking what’s going on in African countries or Syria too. Taken from the most pessimistic perspective, even the idea of mobilising the military in Europe doesn’t feel like a good joke anymore.
If I continue writing about politics, this newsletter will become a part of this agony and there is so much to fix and work on in the music bizz, so the best thing I can do here in this editorial is to focus on that. From the optimistic perspective, as bad as the conditions are, the more creative we are. The future is bright and has a great soundtrack.
