Pt1 - Introduction
words by Miro, from Slovak English translated by Amris
Hello and welcome back,
As promised, the monthly series about the ways we organise raves, parties or events is here. There are some years of experience, observations, conversations, an actual and very real experiment up and running to test the theories behind all this, but the impulse to do something came with the pandemic. That's what changed the feeling that we are doing something wrong into certainty. And hey! Netil Radio residents can tell you how much I have been thinking and talking about it since we had to wear masks in the studio just so we could keep streaming every day.
The gap between the well-paid few and the rest of the “scene” is growing wider and wider. Corporations profit from venue takeovers and ticket sales, entering the underground layer with a “we only do sold-out events” attitude. And on the other side, small promoters and venues struggle in the unfair game of algorithms designed to work for those with capital. It's heartbreaking. As someone who has some responsibilities, here are my thoughts and ideas. I don’t think this will achieve the holy grail of our industry - to “save the scene” - but I am hoping that it will inspire, or encourage conversation in the community.
In the next few months we will talk about the importance of vision and ethos, we will question the tools we use, or how our followers perceive our communication. Is the current business model based on the sale of tickets and alcohol sustainable, or is it time to come up with something that's less 90s and more 21st century? Shall we question venue ownership, and their approach to customers aka our followers? Does the way we sell tickets affect the safety in the club, or why selling tickets in “tears” might create unnecessary pressure, fueling profits of its by-product - resales? Do you as a promoter have actual control of your event and its vision?
All the questions with my eastern european approach to answers alongside realtime data of our experiment, in a monthly one-page-long format. We will start from scratch and next month’s episode will be about the moment you decide to throw a party. About the moment when it all starts…
