Hello and welcome back,
It seems like it only takes one rave and one, or two, right-wing populists to expose the reality of populism - incompetence, lack of empathy and inability to process the more complex reality of the 21st century. Italian populists are no exception, offering simple solutions for imaginary problems. If one of the biggest issues of modern society is fascists marching in the streets, criminalising ravers is the most logical way to deal with it. Especially if ravers are those protesting against fascists, populist needs to be elected. Welcome to the Alternative World of post-truth “conservative” politics dreaming of empires long time fallen.
The new Italian crime of "invasion for dangerous gatherings" covering groups of more than 50 people attracts up to six years in jail and opens up the possibility of ankle-monitoring rave organisers combined with draconian fines. The UK’s latest proposed Public Order Bill seems to be inspired by the same dark force. If you attend or support any protest in which “serious disruption to two or more individuals or to an organisation” occurs, you can be forced to wear an electronic tag. And while everyone is shocked, the kinky obsession of kleptocrats with ankle monitoring feels strange to me. But maybe it’s just that someone from Leaky Sue’s family got into the electronic monitoring device business recently, or abusers in the police force have a passion for monitoring innocent people.
Italy has its first woman, not a fascist prime minister, the UK has the first, not oligarch in the same position. They both represent an archaic model of power and they both are soon to find out it’s not applicable to the new age anymore. The problem is that until we get there, the damage might be apocalyptic.
To speed up the process, we should join unions and climate activists in their resistance and choose wisely in the next election. Looking at Tories in the state of transcendental seizure, that might happen sooner than later. You know where you can find the best soundtrack to survive the chaos.
