Hello and welcome back,
Last week, Spotify gave us no answers and certainly raised more questions; This time the issue was not regarding equal share with artists, but a new element known from social media - lack of responsibility for what appears in the new segment where the company is putting their fingers in - podcast. It amazes me how much of the “freedom of speech” argument is used, regardless of how the system already works to provide information or opinion - newspapers and television. I know, I know, even there it’s not perfect, but there is a system that holds and filters the craziest ideas to be published, therefore being dangerous to the public - ethic and standards principles. Even the blog sphere is able to manage this part so why not social media and podcast platforms?
I spent some time browsing and reading all of the terms and conditions of Spotify, and I didn’t find anything which would point toward ethics or standards apart from a few colourful and meaningless phrases. It’s clear that Spotify is not responsible for what podcasters create and that’s good. But they definitely should be responsible for what is published. It’s their platform and therefore they’re responsible. Same goes for social media platforms.
In 1903 a savvy businessman William Phelps Eno was taking a ride through New York City. He realised that drivers in the city drove however they pleased, same as many social media and podcast platforms users today. That was enough for Eno, so he wrote a book depicting the very first traffic laws. Believe it or not, he was the brains behind stop signs, pedestrian crosswalks, roundabouts, and one-way streets. To this day, Eno is considered the “Father of Traffic Safety”. I love comparing what needs to be done towards social media and data mining platforms with traffic laws, as there is something unique about them - the entire world agrees that the red light means stop. Pretty impressive.
Those times when individuals like William P Eno could do such a thing are long gone, today’s savvy businessmen are focused on more complicated and questionable matters, and we live in modern societies, where we have all the experts we need to create modern internet traffic safety rules, where corporations will have to take their part of responsibility.
A few days ago, facebook experienced its first ever drop in daily users. Number is pretty symbolic, less than a million of its 1.92 billion users. Magical is the 26.4% drop of Meta stock which means $230 billion loss. And somewhere here we can all help society to work this issue out - Use social media only when you really need it. Seems like the less time you spend on social media the less money they make. The less money they make, the more they might be open to understand the importance of accountability for their product’s impact on society. Except Mark.
