Words
Hello and welcome back,
Last week was very wavy. Music fans have been shocked by a streaming service owner investing into military AI and if they really cancel their subscriptions because of it, it would be a good thing. Although some might have different opinions - I personally never understood how we can think it’s ok to have access to all the music for tenner a month 🤔. How can we respect the real value of music this way?
Also “shocking” was the idea of a few DJs playing a festival in Saudi Arabia. Jeff Mills seen his gig there similar to Kraftwer’s Detroit concert in 1979, where protesters compared the German band’s wardrobe to nazi uniforms. And that’s good, because if something goes wrong in techno, there is always Dave Clark to bring back equilibrium…
Interesting is the selective approach to situations like this, because there are far more countries where artists should not perform, government sponsored events - it’s not just about music. Big sport events like the FIFA World Cup, Olympic Games, or Formula One avoiding the reality of the financial, ethical and ecological cost of their events by moving them to the countries where those concerns can be ignored. How can we watch the World Cup in Qatar and really “feel the game” knowing that thousands of people died building the stadium? Well… probably in the same way we can be angry at Jeff (Bezos) flying nearly to space using profits from consumer obsession and exploitation of workers. Christmas is coming and the variant I’ve been worried about last week has a name. Please wear a mask, get a vaccine if you’re still “not sure about it” and be nice to each other.
Till next week, stay connected
