Welcome back,
50 000 estimated number of casualties, 1.5 million displaced persons, 280 miles long frontline. That’s the result of Russian peacekeeping in Ukraine since 2014, before this week’s attack. The aggression which started yesterday, is not just the attack on Ukraine. It is an attack on freedom, it is an attack on democracy itself. Ukraine is also fighting for us, because Russia is terrified to have a neighbour who had the same starting point after the Soviet Union collapse, but now it’s a neighbour who is able to hold democratic elections despite its own problems. Something that hasn't happened in Russia since Putin became the modern emperor. And why is Russia terrified by this? Imagine that Russian people, so connected to Ukraine through Stalin’s Russification of National Minorities, will see their neighbour changing government every election, while their own is in power… forever. It's a terrifying picture for every emperor, even the one who can ride a bear.
Today's world is different to the one after 1987 when Russia and the US made an agreement to withdraw all medium-range and intermediate-range rockets from Europe. Russia just used them in Ukraine yesterday. Vladimir Putin reminded the world that he still has nuclear weapons and it is not a scene from a James Bond movie, but reality. Although the set was nearly perfect, only the shark tank and white cat were missing.
Ukraine needs our help and support right now. You all can do simple post on your social media with #IStandWithUkraine hashtag. If you are not too poor, you can also donate some money. There are list of charity organisations here. I personally know the work of the People In Need organisation who has been very active in Ukraine for a long time. If you're a hacker, Ukraine is constantly attacked by Russian state hackers. You should know what to do.
If you want to know more about the conflict in Ukraine and its history, skip youtube videos and follow Bellingcat, read Coda Story, or support Ukrainian journalists in Kyiv Independent or New Voice of Ukraine. Real information is the key to understanding and will lead us to make the right decisions and demand from our politicians to act. The Russian misinformation machine has been creating chaos in the world for decades using RT television, troll farms, they pay “alternative media” in Europe to spread fake news, manipulate public opinion and divide societies. Donald Trump became US president for that reason, and people like Boris Johnson are helping them to hide their wealth from the people of Russia. Europe and NATO have their own stake in this conflict and that’s why we have to support Ukraine with everything we can. Getting rid of populists who love to play tennis matches with oligarchs is one of things we can do in our democratic elections very soon. Functioning democracy is one of the tools to make sure that sad egomaniacs are not going to shoot rockets on independent countries in aggression based on fairy tales.
