Words
Hello and welcome back,
Every week, when opening a new text document, my aim is to write an optimistic newsletter about music and the scene. No matter how much I try, it always ends with focus on society, politics and the importance of our involvement in community ecosystem.
The problem is that anytime I’m browsing through the “music magazine” websites, it’s always the same thing – there’s near to nothing apart from press releases, and doesn’t matter if it’s 2016 or 2022, there will always be one “Theo Parrish” headline somewhere on the front page. With all the respect to the hero whose work is exceptional. It’s not his fault.
On rare occasions, I see the headline of what might be a sign of journalism, but that usually ends with disappointment and the feeling of missed opportunity – like with this one.
The music universe has more in common with the world of politics than we might like. Especially when it comes to equality. Not just racial or gender equality, but a much wider spectrum of the lost balance between poor and rich, dreamers and hegemons, community leaders and venture capital gurus, local organisers and marketing agencies selling tickets…
I know, it ain’t easy in the corporate world of anonymous investor groups and brand partnerships to work with the full spectrum of music and its culture. Not all of its quirky corners can reach the imaginary numbers of marketing templates. Creating content doesn’t make money, using the content already created does. The exclusivity issue in the article is one of many symptoms of a complex issue.
The reality is not the brightest, but the future is not dark at all. The good news is that the infinite growth mantra is crashing on its limits, with inequality created as its side effect. When investor groups took over or designed new superclubs, the community answered with illegal raves to make sure that local talents could establish themselves in the scene. When ticket sellers are cancelling events, because “we only do sold-out events”, local heroes are organising intimate gatherings in hidden secret spaces, focused on music, not the number of tickets sold. When club security abuses people in queues, at the entrance, on the dancefloor and in toilets, local promoters are able to provide safe space through good communication with their communities.
We all can contribute to a brighter future. Support local heroes doing hard work, to keep the ethos of safe music spaces and equal opportunities for talents in balance. Avoid corporation-owned ticket services or promotion agencies' events. If you’re one of the local heroes, build your community using a mailing list instead of social media and sell tickets yourself, so you know your crowd without passing their data to advertisers.
Here, in our little quirky station, we do everything to create a safe space for future local heroes. And we always will.
Thank you for reading, stay connected
