Words
Hello and welcome back,
It’s coming! No worries, I don't mean the war in Ukraine (real since 2014), or James Blunt’s music in New Zealand's police official playlist, nor even a tiny bit of reality from Spotify… Hold tight, as Record Store Day is coming and we have been blessed with a full list of RSD 2022 releases this week. Have I said hold tight already?
Four+ David Bowie releases is becoming a trademark of RSD, making me wonder why we still can’t bet on which Bowie album is going to jump the queue in the pressing plant this time, or which independent label will have their release delayed to fulfil the demand of supermarket records isles. We all feel, somewhere deep inside, that Elvis is still alive. Hence why we need two albums reissued, one of which for those who only read in French. Because why would you buy an original for three quid, if you can buy new, maybe coloured vinyl version for thirty or so? The list looks like it’s been inspired by your grandparent’s accidental and forgotten record collection. Madonna, Elton John, of course no real RSD without Prince 😬, The Offspring 🤭, Slash 🙃, Mariah Carey, oooooor Ace Of Base 🤯. In normal reality, at your age, you have no idea what Ace Of Base is in 2022. Sadly the perception of today’s reality is shifted and you think Ace Of Base is fun, because you heard it in a dj set at a famous festival, new era journalist wrote about it and now you have to buy it for loads of money, while you wait an extra few weeks for your mate’s new album.
RDS is a perfect example of how it works when The Big Three take over any good idea created to support the music community minorities, secretly integrating the old system using advanced marketing tools not to evolve, but to cement it well in a new era. Soundcloud, or Mixcloud can tell us stories about, and even Spotify’s “revolutionary solution to digital music” ended up the first moment they had to deal with copyright and the three molochs controlling the system, originally designed to protect labels in times when it was not so cheap to manufacture releases. Those times are long gone, the system is still the same, only its new layout is a bit more flashy.
And a solution? As wise people say - everyday is record store day. To keep the balance right, buy music you love on bandcamp, or in local record shops and listen to Netil Radio. All three ways are good for you, good for the tribe.
Thank you for reading and stay connected
