Because we don't know when we will die
We get to think of life as an inexhaustible well
Yet everything happens only a certain number of times
And a very small number, really
How many more times will you remember a certain afternoon of your childhood
Some afternoon that is so deeply a part of your being that you can't even conceive your life without it?
Perhaps four or five times more
Perhaps not even that
How many more times will you watch the full moon rise?
Perhaps twenty, and yet it all seems limitless
Ryuichi Sakamoto - Fullmoon - words by Paul Bowles
Neo, a Japanese New Yorker, was the customer every waiter loves at first sight. Nice, polite, smart and with a good sense of humour. Spending a few months in London due to an internship gave him a chance to find our little hidden gem. I remember our coffee was exceptional at that time and he was a coffee lover. It didn’t take long and he asked for a job. I’m pretty sure he was doing it for the sake of playing with good coffee and food rather than for money. It was a pleasure to work with Neo. Thoughts were in symbiosis, moves were synchronised. And there was a shared passion for music. He played bass and music was present in his family. “My dad is a pianist,” he said…
This is how the story of my moment with Ryuichi Sakamoto begins. It was short but special, as the music was a secondary element, although I will remember every second from backstage after his concert forever. Meeting the creator of the incredible amount of sounds inspiring generations of music lovers is something that can change a life, and perspective, inspire one to discover new ideas and respect traditions.
There are more competent people to write about the life and work of Ryuichi Sakamoto and I’ll leave it to them. What makes Ryuichi Sakamoto truly special to me is not just the music, but also his presence in society. He believed in a better world and was active when needed. He was a member of the anti-nuclear organization, and a known critic of copyright law, arguing that it is antiquated in the information age - "the last 100 years, only a few organizations have dominated the music world and ripped off both fans and creators" and that "with the internet, we are going back to having tribal attitudes towards music."
Even in the last moments of his life, he made his attitude towards war in Ukraine clear by composing a composition for the Ukrainian violinist Ilya Bondarenko.
Ryuichi Sakamoto’s music inspired me long before I knew who’d composed it and discovering his music universe is a truly special experience. Spending a moment in time with his son Neo was an extraordinary way to understand his legacy better and be fortunate enough to meet him in person. His mix for my Morning Transition is the most delicious cherry on my own music tart.
Was an honour to meet you, Ryuichi Sakamoto. Rest In Peace.
