Words
Hello and welcome back to our link storm,
First - A big thank you! For contributing to our little effort to help to protect democracy under the threat. Together, we raised some awareness about the situation, supported Ukrainian artists by purchasing their music via bandcamp and you, our small radio community, raised and donated £1283.00 - It’s more than we expected and we are proud of you! All your contributions are now in the accounts of the chosen charities. Thank you!
Last week was intense for the alternative world of alternative democracy, and the future of Europe’s unity. Viktor Orbán won election in Hungary. Again. Fourth time. Impressive, one can say. But the word shocking is coming to my mind. I don’t mean it’s shocking that Orbán won the election. In last 12 years in power, Orbán took over control in every aspect of society. From the media, through institutions topping it up with brutal takeover of academic institutions and establishing Chinese influence in the academic environment. All this with the never ending destabilisation of European Union unity is enough to question the purpose of having a country like this in the union. And now the shocking part - Viktor Orbán in his winning speech said that he defeated his enemy - Volodymyr Zelensky. In normal circumstances this will simply break a normal person’s brain. How unreal it is to say that. A politician who destroyed the opposition in three election periods is turning his focus to the president of another country in hunt for an imaginary enemy.. A country which is under brutal attack by someone who is financing Orbán’s tool to control his position. The pieces of this puzzle are very poorly designed, they fit, but it’s just too obvious.
Of course Viktor Orbán didn’t run a campaign against the president of Ukraine. He only did what all populists do - used the momentum of the situation for his own good. He bought the votes of Hungarian people for cheap gas and oil soaked in the blood of innocent people. Pretty much the same thing as we can see some western politicians doing - instead of sitting down with environmental crisis advisers and experts to use the problem for something good. Like get rid of fossil fuels and focus on renewable energy. But populists go to ask different dictators to supply the goods instead.
The time of populist should be over soon. Every day they prove that their priorities are twisted. Selfish, short lasting with no solution for the future challenges. Elections are coming and we should stop being lethargic and start to be active in demanding our politicians to do what the purpose of their job is - to serve.
You can spend the time until the next election by taking a break from facebook, reading investigative journalism and listening to Netil Radio. It’s good for you, good for the future.
