Hello and welcome back,
That was quick. Our latest, unelected PM just resigned, so she can finally get her job in one of the delivery companies, where she can deliver whatever customers wished for. In the meantime, we are going to experience something very close to what russians experienced when Gorbachev realised that certain things are not fixable and left the darkness to create a monster.
Regular readers of this newsletter know about my passion to draw the parallel between post-communist world that brought us the kleptocracy of the 21st century and UK politics. Everything I wrote here has visual form now. Adam Curtis did it for us in his latest epic showcase of video storytelling TraumaZone.
This incredible visual experience, with no audio commentary, shows the terrifying speed with which the gap between rich and poor opened up. There were “no potatoes in Moscow” while the new elite restages elaborate 18th century balls in old palaces outside St Petersburg. We can see the ruthless self-interest of managers and criminals as they discover more and more ways to loot the failing state, using oligarchs’ “banks” to redirect the wealth into safe offshore zones. And no one in the political system could stop them. At the heart of all this was an always drunken president Yeltsin who sat in the Kremlin staring at the wall saying to his bodyguard: “They are stealing Russia.”
UK’s political and social system is out of control and it seems like there is no one with any alternative. Those in charge of the system are profiting from chaos, corrupting politicians and the system to create the absurd “alternative reality” of infinite growth on a finite planet. London became a money laundering service for the world’s dictators, kleptocrats and gangsters. Tories are stealing Britain and we need a general strike for the general election.
