Hello and welcome back,
I hope you survived the mourning period and didn’t get lost in the tsunami of reality when all the media stopped “reporting” on the issue. Now we can start to see the damage some can do in ten days. As a guy who grew up in a dictatorship, I never thought I would have so many deja vu moments in such a short period. People in the UK getting arrested for holding transparent the same way as people holding plain paper in russia* (the only difference was the level of physical abuse). Environmental protesters are held in jail for months, while those who cause the crisis are enjoying the lift on banned bonuses. The “Rwanda plan” so similar to russian* move relocating Ukrainians to Siberia might be on hold, but that doesn’t stop the Home Office from rolling out GPS tracking devices for migrants entering the country. All bans designed to tackle inequality or protect the environment are being lifted or scraped...
With a list of things to come, which seems to be copied from the autocrat's playbook, it’s time to remember the wave of protests rising before the queen died and get back to it. I suggest doing it before we end up like russians, who were quiet when their emperor was taking over of every aspect of their life one by one. Dictatorship doesn’t come with an intentional evil plan. It comes subtly in the moments when we are apathetic to our surroundings, moments we choose to stay in our comfort zone instead of resisting.
To keep your mind in focus, we prescribe daily doses of Netil Radio. It’s good for you.
Thank you for reading and stay connected

It Takes Time ‘No Spoilers here mate’ Film Review Corner

Speak No Evil (2022)
A crushing Danish film that unravels and twists through awkward social satire, oh so bloody tense drama and bleak, brutal horror. Don’t want to say very much about this one so just go in cold if this sounds like your sort of thing. But beware….. It gets pretty dark. [Available on Shudder!]
James White (2015)
A super raw, very low-budget independent drama starring Christopher Abbott, who is one of my favourite actors at the moment. He plays the titular wannabee NYC-based writer struggling to deal with the immediacy of familial grief and life demanding more of you than you are emotionally ready to admit/give. Abbott’s portrayal is gripping, playing the character as someone you rarely sympathise with but can’t stop watching. Stellar support from Cynthia Nixon, Scott Mescudi and Ron Livingston plus a blink and you’ll miss early cameo from Zazie Beetz! Hope the director Josh Mond comes back with a new project soon! [Available on MUBI!]
Saloum (2021)
This is a truly thrilling Senegalese that blends and bends cinematic genres expertly. Features a breakout central performance by Yann Gael as one of a trio of mercenaries escaping a coup and taking refuge at a holiday camp by the Saloum river whereupon things go awry. Another one you should go in cold on, details-wise, to enjoy the fullest! [Available on Shudder!]
Prey (2022)
Lastly, a bit of franchise love here to show I have broad tastes :) Blown away by this Predator prequel which I was so very apprehensive of after numerous underwhelming/straight out awful franchise entries. Outstanding central performances from Amber Midthunder and Coco the dog; exquisite cinematography; excellent action scenes; very cool new character design and tech/weaponry innovations for the alien antagonist all combine for the best Predator film since the original. Watched four times since it was released!! [Available on Mickey+]
That’s all for this week, stay tuned
