Words
Hello People of Netil Radio… Shimmy here today. There were so many ways to start this week’s Newsletter. A week that marks the anniversary of George Floyds (Rest In Power)
A murder, carried out in broad daylight, by a uniformed cop and captured on a smart phone.
Around 1000 people are killed at the hands of cops in the US every year. Proportionately similar in the uk. Watching the world rising up against this last year during the BLM protests, both on the streets and online, in a movement that included the voices of millions of us around the world standing up and speaking out to amplify the voices of those less heard was heartening and gave me hope. It felt like the world was waking up and realising the power of our collective efforts campaigning to stop similar injustices against humanity.
State violence is real and if we don’t begin to rise up against it, I fear for the future. If Priti Patel gets her way, in this country even peaceful protests will become illegal. I hope you have signed petitions and written to your MP regarding this matter. Please follow this link to do so
How do we decide how and where to use our voices and how do we decide what is right and wrong…? I often find that looking at facts help. Not so easy with the amount of mis-information and distorted truths are told by the mainstream.
Killing children and civilians, who are essentially trapped - is wrong and can not be reasoned. But why take my word for it - click on the facts
In the information age in which we find ourselves there is A-Lot to shift through. Literally everyone is shouting but be careful to differentiate between opinion and facts. Also, language - it’s a powerful tool and manipulated so subtly that until you are actively seeking to critique it - dehumanising subtleties can be hard to pick up - but believe, they are there.
If we use the most recent events in Illegally occupied Palestine as an example of crimes against humanity. Palestinians are described as “dead” and Israeli casualties are “killed” - hearing little manipulations of language like that everyday, from ‘trusted’ news sources that we pay for (BBC) without questioning them and before long - Palestinians are somehow less human than Israelis and therefore not worthy of the same rights - this is further perpetuated by the fact that war crimes committed against the people of an illegally occupied Palestine have long gone ignored.
Just to put it into context for you, Israel has broken 65 UN resolutions - crimes against humanity, without being condemned by most of our world leaders/ international community. Iraq allegedly broke 2 and was invaded, bombed and destroyed.
In the song “I can’t breathe” H.E.R. raps - “Destruction of minds, bodies, and human rights. Stripped of bloodlines, whipped and confined. This is the American pride. It’s justifying a genocide”
But what exactly is genocide? A United Nations commission of experts defined ethnic cleansing as “a purposeful policy designed by one ethnic or religious group to remove by violent and terror-inspiring means the civilian population of another ethnic or religious group from certain geographic areas.”
We can see that happening in places around the world including; Xinjiang region of China, where there are literal concentration camps incarcerating Uyghurs and forcing them to make clothes for high street brands such as Zara and H+M. The Rohingya population and Palestinians - there are others too and until ALL of us are free - none of us are.
Lest we be complicit in our silence and through our purchasing choices. Whether you wish to believe it or not it’s the silence of the privileged and our lazy choices that help to perpetuate the atrocities happening around the world.
The good news is that there are things we can all do if we truly wish for change. It’s time to come together, united - to stand up and be the change we seek - in whatever ways we can, big or small….
As we amplify the music, let us also amplify the voices of the voiceless and oppressed.
What you can do to help stop crimes against Humanity…..
BOYCOTT
BDS - Buycott, divestment and Sanctions - this approach worked for stopping apartheid in South Africa could hopefully work in this instance - helping to stop the illegal occupation of Palestine.
