Hello everyone,.. oh hello summer!
I hope everyone is enjoying the long awaited rays of sunshine touching our skin. Make sure you have sunscreen with you - always… and that your friends don’t draw funny things on you with it while you sleep in the sun.
It’s been a very intense week at radio HQ. We’ve had an offer too good to refuse and it will change everything 🤯 I still can’t really believe it’s going to happen. Before I tell you more, I would love to take a moment to thank everyone who is tuning to our station, asking for IDs in chatroom, sending us feedback and beautiful words in emails. It gives us energy to keep going and helps us remember that there is more good than evil in this world.
Soon we will hopefully be able to enjoy freedom sans restrictions. But the reality is that we are still in a global pandemic, the virus is still here and it’s very important that the whole world gets the vaccine, not just the country we live in.
Everyone wants to go back to “normal”. Question is - do we really want to go back to that? Was it actually good? Don’t you have a feeling that we should try to re-define “normal” a little?
In my honest opinion, the time before the pandemic wasn’t “normal”, and the pandemic just exposed that. Even the music industry has its own Jeff Bezzos or Dyson kinds.
We had artists taking fees based on some alternate reality, djs gaining privileged access to gigs. We had visionless promoters ignoring the potential of local talent just because it’s more comfortable to blindly follow templates - play it ‘safe’. We had night clubs who didn’t come up with any creative approach to the situation and then ended up with “table service gigs” where the music, or logistics don’t reflect the reality of the situation, and extra effort is wasted on security shouting at people trying to have fun and stopping them to do what they have been triggered to do - like, dance.
We have chill-out djs or djs who are playing music for people who have to sit and pay serious money to book a table.
It’s not like we didn’t have enough time to be creative. It is possible to make restrictions enjoyable, it’s totally possible to think outside of the imaginary box and old templates.
So, maybe old dinosaurs need to go extinct, the bubbling scene full of talents have to get out of illegality and show the millionaire and corporation owned venues what it should look like when you are creative.
We all should think twice about what kind of tickets we are buying and what kind of events we are going to support. There will be plenty of those who have been busy and creative the entire time. And when you go out, please be responsible, follow advice and rules of organisers and mainly - give the others space and respect. You will enjoy it much much more, trust me…
