Words
Hello and welcome back,
Fifty days, seven weeks, nearly two months. That’s how long the brave people of Ukraine have been defending their freedom and our democracy. Fifty days, seven weeks and nearly two months, our leaders have been processing the situation and trying to find a template they can use to work it out. But there is no template for such a situation. It’s not a marketing campaign, it’s a war.
I know, I know. Fifty days is long enough for us to be tired of it. It’s all over the news, tv, internet. We even forgot there is a pandemic still going on, delivering new strains and uncomfortable data. Information is so compressed that it’s hard to read between the lines these days. Ideal situation for populists and, as we should learn by now, populists don’t wait if they see an opportunity. Last week was fertile for them, like a good spring.
Let’s start shall we? The most mind blowing is the synchronisation of the emperor of alternative reality, with the UK's most expensive tennis player. One is “resettling” Ukrainian refugees to Siberia and the Arctic Circle, while the other one wants to send all refugees to Rwanda. Yes you read that right - resettling refugees to a country which, not so long ago, commited genocide on their own people.
And the UK is really rolling these days. Sending weapons to Ukraine is important, but will not buy you a safe place in heaven. Real heroes making sure that single women running from war zones will not be matched with predatory single men via the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Seriously.
Closer to Mordor, the Austrian Chancellor did what he should not. He went to Sauron’s tower, met the emperor behind the longest table and… the gas and oil stream is safe for now. Here is why it’s “safe” and anytime you have some doubt about the war in Ukraine, just go back to that link.
A big danger to our freedom is that we slow or select the support for Ukraine in exchange for gas and oil “safety”. After 50 days of war crimes it’s clear that the narrative has changed. It’s no more about defending Ukraine. It’s about defeating the aggressor. The longer we are going to wait, the harder it will be to do it.
Now, more than ever, we have to work on our multitasking skills. We can’t stop watching our own butlers, enablers and useful idiots (term not offence). Luckily we still don’t have to turn into soldiers to fight, but the battle for democracy is not just empire’s bombs falling on Ukraine. It’s also accountability for the environment allowing kleptocrats and war criminals to finance their alternative reality monstrosities.
While we are choosing our local Mayor, preparing for the next election, music is important for the peace of our minds. Come and join us on our terrace on Netil Market or just tune in. It's good for you, good for the mind.
Thank you for reading and stay connected
