Hello and welcome back,
It’s the time of the year when all the men who ignore women will celebrate women, and I guess it will stay this way until we stop ignoring women as a sociological default. I believe we will get there at some point. The only problem is that for some reason, anytime we take a few steps forward, there is always some kind of an inevitable step backwards.
In the last few months, two women who are shaping my perspective on this world asked publicly for a break from their positions. Both are named Zuzana, which might be just a cute detail, but the fact that Slovak's most successful military product is a howitzer Zuzana is taking this detail to whole new heights.
The first Zuzana is the president of Slovakia. She is the best president my country ever had and she never did one thing wrong, and if she admits any mistake she takes action to rectify it. Everything she says is an honest truth or a painful fact delivered with respect towards those she is speaking to. It’s her superpower. And trust me, she is the only politician I could ever write such sentences about. She will not run for president in the second term. (Hello Joe Biden)
The second Zuzana is one of the most influential journalists in Slovakia, specialising in politics, human rights and everything around the two. Her ability to maintain sensible dialogue with someone she deeply disagrees with is extraordinary and powerful. She will stop writing about politics for a while.
Both Zuzanas are successful women and they understand and respect the power of their positions. So why do they need a break? Abuse. So toxic, that these two very strong women need some space to breathe because they can’t fully commit to their missions anymore. Abuse so toxic, that a woman who successfully defeated the mafia behind an illegal landfill long before she became president is not able to cope with all the attacks.
Incompetent egocentrics are falling apart when trying to argue with smart women, so the only choice of self-defence is naturally an attack. Being a woman is dangerous for weak men and the fear seems to be unbearable.
It’s a pattern of the social media era. The weak now can access digital public spaces where there are no rules for how to behave, only terms and conditions designed to monetise everything that moves. Big Data is the Big Tobacco of our era and we should act like that.
The time is now. To celebrate women, we need to make sure the digital public space is safe for women to stay and be celebrated. They can’t prove their skills in a toxic environment. Writing death threats is not freedom of speech. It’s death threats and there is no difference if they are digital or physical. How long will it take us to accept what needs to be done so we can take steps forward?
Too much to digest? We have a good soundtrack for you to adjust your perception for the future.
Thank you for reading and stay connected
P.S.
Everyone wants FACTS. Here is one from the “equal opportunities” section.
I collected the last 100 radio show proposals from all NR radio emails except social media messages. Let’s say - serious proposals. Here is what I learned:
89! were proposals from men.
52 of 89 of these proposals were some variation of, “Have you got any slots going?”
10 of 11 women proposals were short, but complex radio show proposals.
End of gender equality report. Happy International Women's Day.
