Editorial
Words by Miro, from Slovak English translated by Amris
This is supposed to be the second part of our experiment, but as we are reaching the peak moment of another historical change of world order, the violence escalates, emotions are too strong and divisions are getting wider and wider. It’s the perfect environment for all the riders of chaos actually responsible for the violence.
When it comes to Ukraine, I can speak from the position of someone growing up in soviet era. I do not have the knowledge or moral authority to speak about how things look from the Israeli, or Palestinian perspective. I chose to listen.
A society divided on opinions, occupied by amplified hate. An alternative reality glitching with the actual one adjusted by algorithms that change our perspective and ability to analyse information. These conditions create the society every dictator, imaginary emperor or simple populist needs to thrive. And the actual situation in Israel and Palestine is a consequence of incompetence coming along with populism. We all know that, but it doesn’t mean we will ignore the reality and horror of Hamas's attack.
If we want peace, solution, or dialogue, we need to learn to listen in the first place. If we want others to respect us we need to respect them. There are facts and truth on both sides, with questionable equality of acceptance. The rise of violence and conflict all around the world is the main effect of our choice to elect people with “charisma” but no skills. Syria, Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Azerbaijan, all across the African continent… It’s always the same pattern, same corruption, same divisions, same tools, same intentions.
Are you angry about Gaza? I suggest you breathe slowly and focus your attention towards your own government, taking your rights one by one while saying the exact same words as those you are angry about right now. There is always a breaking point and you might be practising wearing a gas mask, as I did as a child at school, with a snap of the finger of time. And trust me, there will be no petition able to help.
I believe it's time we listen to those who need to be heard, we support those who need the support, with mutual respect and less emotion. Let's try.
We have a perfect soundtrack to practise the listening part.
