The Experiment pt.1
Words by Miro, from Slovak English translated by Amris
Hello and welcome back,
I hope you are enjoying sunny autumn moments. September is my favourite time of the year, with my homeland bathing in all colours of green, red and yellow spectrum. It’s most beautiful when it’s exactly like the weather we have now in London. My face soaks in the sun every morning when opening the studio, our garden seems happy and I’m ready for the autumn cuts.
As mentioned last week, we have a small experiment running with a fellow radio-head, exploring a new approach to organising the party. So far it seems to prove the thoughts, so let me share them with you.
The idea behind the experiment is that all the party's core elements got lost in modern times – we know it’s not good, but we are not sure where the problem is. The core elements, we believe, are community, inclusivity and freedom. Let’s be honest, venues are not as safe as the number of security guards might suggest, while communication is lost in marketing mantras and alternative reality algorithms of social media (data).
Promoters(clubs) have no control over who’s in the crowd because anyone can buy, re-sell or do dodgy things on websites with the only product: tickets (data again). The theory is that all these issues are connected to those modern-era products designed to extract data and the biggest difference between the time past and now – the way we control the entry before anyone comes near the venue – is the way we sell tickets and how we engage with the people buying them.
Crazy right? But think about it. The holy grail of success these days is the number of followers and likes. There are plenty of middlemen (data) who will “help you” to “create” the perfect marketing strategy, or “reveal the mystery” behind the best time to post your selfie. And you are busy doing exactly that, often paying for it. But in reality, you are further and further from communication with your community, surrounded by virtual strangers, asking artists to help you sell real tickets, because your ticket-selling service is suggesting you cancel your event due to slow sales. Sounds familiar right?
A couple of years ago, my well-trained YouTube algorithm suggested a TEDx video with someone who was explaining why the prehistoric mailing list is the future tool to communicate with your customers. Everything he said made sense and right now it’s very much the reason why you read this newsletter. It’s very simple - if someone subscribes, they probably want to receive the information from you, comfortably in the email, where they’re logged in because they want to… read emails. Now imagine that you stop focusing on social media as the main tool, and start communicating with those who want to come to your night, somewhere where they’re not focused on scrolling, without the pressure of likes. You know not just who opened your email, but also how many times or when. You see who is engaging, and what links they click on. They can also reply to your email with comments or questions, which takes things to a more personal and cosier experience. And the wrong people? They unsubscribe.
As the classic saying goes, “It’s time to take back control” over our community and not just use our data, but protect them by using them for the community’s greater good and improvements. Create your own world, with your own terms, using the newsletter platform to build your community. That is the first step in our theory and enough information for you to start with. Next week we dive deep into how selling tickets without middlemen might help to have a safer and inclusive party.
Thank you for reading and stay connected
