Hello and welcome back,
Can you feel it? It’s in the air now… 🌱 A brief look at our mini garden outside tells me it’s time to order compost and book the gardening day in the calendar. I can’t wait, because after gardening, my mind feels better than after the yoga that I didn’t do.
Spring is also a time of transformation and new beginnings. Apart from some changes in the way we archive the audio and our migration to Soundcloud, we are all ready to launch our Discord channel. If everything goes well over the weekend, we will invite you to join in next week’s Newsfilter. We are very excited because you will be able to connect with our residents, find future collaborators, or promote your events and services.
One of the secrets of evolution is the skill to adapt. Remember the pandemic? It was that moment when circumstances gave us time and space to adapt and evolve. And we failed. And what am I talking about? Events, parties, raves… The pandemic is over (kind of), events and parties are back and so are we. In the same misery as before the pandemic, even worse. As the gap between poor and rich in society widens, our industry is not immune to reality, although we often love to lie to ourselves on Instagram. Our industry was broken before the pandemic and it’s even more broken now. Most of London’s hype venues are owned by investor groups who also pour money into promotion agencies and the result is a “we only do sold-out events” situation and one will wonder who does all the events which are not sold out.
The part that breaks my brain is the “business model” based on two sources of income: tickets and alcohol sales. Obviously, it’s split between the venue and promoter, so one source each. On top of that, we have tools and services that mimic its purpose and extract data in reality. Social media are not connecting us unless we spend loads of money on marketing campaigns, and the ticket sellers are telling promoters to cancel events, because they don’t sell enough tickets in advance, instead of providing ticket selling service. Who cares that people’s habits have changed after the pandemic?
So what's my problem? Well, it’s more of an attempt to find a solution rather than the problem. I didn't waste the time of the pandemic asking people for support, but did a lot of thinking and talking to people instead. The thoughts transformed into reality in October last year, when I teamed up with TSUNIMAN and what looks like a semi-secret club* night, but is actually an experiment in redesigning the business model of event organisation, repurposing its tools and priorities. Seems like it’s working and the good news is that we are ready to share what we learned and hopefully inspire others. More in the new monthly column called The PTS Experiment, which is coming to our Newsfilter in the first week of April.
Times of change need a timeless soundtrack and we’ve got you covered.
Thank you for reading and stay connected
